Coco is easily the most popular growing medium in the indoor gardening / hydroponics industry. Ever greater numbers of gardeners are choosing to grow in coco (commonly referred to as coco coir, coconut coir or coco peat), seeking out the accelerated plant growth, increased yields and improved crop quality offered by this exceptional growing medium. It delivers an accommodating structure, fairly neutral pH, lots of aeration, naturally occurring trichoderma and great drainage properties.
All of our coco coir is buffered and rinsed to remove salts and balance its cation exchange capacity, ensuring that it provides a stable environment for plant growth without residual mineral content that can throw out electrical conductivity levels, cause harm to roots and stunt plant growth. When you purchase a growing medium from GroWell, you know that it has passed our stringent checks and is of the very highest quality.
The above-mentioned properties combine to push root growth and development as far as possible, helping plants to reach their full potential. Not bad for a growing medium derived from the husks of coconuts!
Containing no nutrient content whatsoever, these coco coir mediums give you complete control over plant nutrition (which is typically mineral-based) and real freedom to experiment in pursuit of the ultimate results. As a by-product of the coconut industry, coco coir is also environmentally and ecologically friendly - making everyone a winner! Coco coir makes a great standalone growing medium, though you can also fine-tune its characteristics by adding perlite or clay pebbles (or opting for one of our 70/30 or 60/40 grow mixes). These additives push drainage levels even further, creating mixes that will require watering more often, thus making them well suited to an array of active grow systems.
Many gardeners like to use it to enhance their soil, peat or compost based mixes, too.
